The militarisation of the Arctic has no rational justification.

Russia has 8 nuclear icebreakers, mainly used to keep the Northern Sea Route open (North of Russia), also called the ‘North-east Passage’. The most powerful, “Arktika”, launched in 2020, can break through ice up to 3m thick. A new series of even more powerful icebreakers with capacity for 4m ice (‘Project Leader’) are under construction and the first is expected to be launched in 2030.

Donald Trump’s intent to grab Greenland adducing security concerns has suddenly led NATO to claim that it needs to build up the military in the Arctic. A hitherto relatively peaceful area has now turned into a new arena for military tensions and arms race. This is pure insanity.
